To further his business career, Francisco moved to Seville and supported his widowed sister, Constanza. He left for Chile in 1555 in the fleet of the new governor, Gerónimo de Alderete. Once he settled there, his family left Spain to join him in 1562. He resided in Concepción in 1568 and later in Santiago, and although he was primarily a businessman, he later began to take on military roles. He became a Jesuit after the death of his wife.
