de Toledo
(1520–90) Biographical President of the Audiencia of Lima 1568 After studying at the University of Salamanca, Fernando was ordained as a priest and devoted himself to the ministry of preaching. He was offered a variety of ecclesiastical positions and prebends, all of which he declined, with the sole exception of the post of president of the Audiencia of Lima. However, just before his departure to Peru, he chose to forgo this position as well, opting instead to remain in Spain and continue his preaching. In 1538, King Philip II nominated him for the cardinalate, a title he was granted by Pope Gregory XIII. Fernando, however, requested three days to reflect on whether to accept the honour. Ultimately, he decided to decline the appointment, explaining that he did not feel himself worthy of such an elevation. As a result, the Pope annulled the nomination that same year.
