1st Conde de Oropesa (–1504) Biographical 1st Conde de Oropesa 1477–1504† 5th Señor de Oropesa 1462–1504† 5th Señor de Tornavacas 1462–1504† 5th Señor de Jarandilla 1462–1504† Fernando, born posthumously, was placed under the guardianship of his mother, Leonor de Estúñiga, who administered his estate until he came of age in 1480, in accordance with his father's wishes. In 1477, Isabella I granted him the title of Count of Oropesa in recognition of the family's long-standing loyalty to the Crown, particularly during the War of Succession. This title, a century in the making since Enrique II had granted the town to the family's founder in 1366, enabled the Oropesa family to join the ranks of Castile's wealthiest nobles. Queen Isabella provided a substantial dowry of 3 million maravedíes for his second wife. A cultured man, Fernando possessed a library of forty-three volumes, documented in an exhaustive inventory drawn up after his death in 1504, which also listed his lands, assets, and personal belongings.
