1st Señor de Higares (–1439) Other names: El Viejo Biographical 1st Señor de Higares –1439† Corregidor of Trujillo Fernando became Señor of Higares, a castle that had belonged to the Templars, along with pastureland on the banks of the Tagus River above Toledo. He was a valiant knight who distinguished himself greatly in the campaigns against the Moors and in the significant events of his time, as recounted in the chronicle of King John II of Castile. There, he is called ‘the Elder’ to distinguish him from his first cousin of the same name—the 4th Lord of Valdecorneja and 1st Count of Alba de Tormes—who was known as ‘the Younger'. Fernando and his wife purchased the main chapel of Santa María de la Sisla, outside the walls of Toledo, from the Order of Saint Jerome to serve as their burial place. Through Fernando’s marriage to Teresa Vázquez, their descendants became connected to the royal family, who always treated them with the regard and esteem befitting their noble and shared lineage. His will was dated 25 July 1438.
