2nd Señor de Valdecorneja 1370–84†

Alguacil mayor of Toledo 1366?
Chief notary of Toledo 1360–68

At a young age, Fernando and his brother García were in the service of Pedro I at Tejadillo from the late 1340s. He continued to serve the king and was put in charge of the recently captured castle of Monteagudo, leading the Squires of the King's Body from 1358 until 1364. In 1359, he commanded a galley in the Castilian navy against the Aragonese in the Mediterranean. He continued to fight in the war against Aragon, alongside his brother García. In 1364, he lost an eye during battle. In 1366, Fernando was in command of Calatayud after being called upon to accompany the king on his march from Burgos to Seville to confront Enrique de Trastámara. His brother García accompanied him, and upon reaching Toledo, the king entrusted them with the city's defence. However, Toledo's influential figures, swayed by private interests, sided with the Trastámara faction. For this, they received ample rewards—including García, who received the lordships of Oropesa and Valdecorneja—while Fernando remained loyal to Pedro. His loyalty was recognised with various appointments. After García renounced the mastership of Santiago, Fernando adapted to the changing political landscape, benefiting from his brother’s new position under the Trastámara monarchy. Upon García's death in 1370, he inherited the lordship of Valdecorneja and focused on managing this estate, building a stronghold in Piedrahíta, which would later become the site of the Dukes of Alba’s 18th-century palace. Fernando was largely absent from court life until King Juan I appointed him Marshal of Castile in 1382, during the war against Portugal. He led the expedition to Lisbon in 1384 but died there from the plague. The reason Fernando inherited the lordship of Valdecorneja instead of García's children is not certain.
