Subsequently, he entered a controversial second marriage with Mencía de Mendoza in Guadalajara, which provoked the wrath of King Philip II. The King supported the first union because, it seems, he wanted to avoid the House of Toledo's excessive rise to power. Antonio was imprisoned at the Castle of La Mota. During his exile, he continued his family's tradition of patronage, and was notably the patron of the playwright Félix Lope de Vega, who entered the Duke's service. Antonio's second marriage was ultimately legitimised, and he was pardoned and returned from exile in 1595. He enjoyed the favour of the new king, Philip III, and was appointed to a number of positions, but due to disagreements with the Duke of Lerma, he retreated from the political scene and retired to his estates, until he was appointed viceroy of Naples. In Naples, he continued his patronage of the arts, particularly of writers and poets, and commissioned a painting by Ribera. In 1636, Antonio was successful in claiming the estates left by a distant cousin, the Marqués de Bohoyo, and Bohoyo and La Horcajada were added to the lordship of Valdecorneja.
