| Alonso
Álvarez de Toledo
(c. 1465–<1501?) Other names: Alonsillo de Figares Biographical It is said that Alonso's mother was from the town of Casarrubios, where she later entered a convent; that he was raised by his maternal grandparents in Toledo; and that he was educated in Salamanca. After the death of his first wife, he pursued a military career and distinguished himself in the war against the Moors of Granada, and later in other battles, such as the conquest of Loja, under the command of Diego Fernández de Córdoba, Conde de Cabra. Some scholars have questioned the claim that Alonso was the illegitimate son of Fernando, the 3rd Señor de Higares, citing a lack of solid evidence and chronological issues. Recent research has revealed that the will of García, 2nd Señor de Higares, drawn up in 1472, stipulates that a sum be allocated to a certain Alonsillo de Figares and that he be sent to live in the care of García's son and principal heir, Fernando. From this and other evidence, it is now believed that Alonso (called Alonsillo due to his young age) was García's natural son, born after his father was widowed in 1461 following the death of his first wife, and that Fernando was his half-brother, not his father. He is no longer mentioned in documentation after 1501 and may have died in a rebellion. Place of second marriage: Baena Previously said to be the illegitimate son of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo and an unnamed woman, now more likely to be a son of García Álvarez de Toledo and an unnamed woman. He was married firstly to Catalina de Salcedo (daughter of Diego de Barnuevo and Catalina Yáñez de Salcedo) with issue: • García (see) Alonso was married and secondly to Teresa Fernández, with issue: • Fernando (see) |
