Main Events

A diplomat, Xhelal became a very influential figure, gaining fame in Europe and was considered the leader of the independence movement of Albania. He was charged with delivering a petition to the Sultan which was ultimately judged as secessionist and it failed. Considered a threat to the Empire, he was arrested and sent to Constantinople. It was alleged that he was later poisoned and buried hastily.[2]
