The Tribuna of the Uffizi Oil on canvas, 123.5 x 155.0 cm, by Johann Zoffany, 1772–77 The Royal Collection, United Kingdom |
||||||||||
| Commissioned by Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, the painting is a finely detailed, panoramic depiction of highlights from the Grand Duke of Tuscany’s collection in the richly adorned Tribuna room of the Uffizi. It combines faithful representations of paintings and sculptures with portraits of British visitors, capturing both the magnificence of the collection and the atmosphere of cultural observation. Zoffany included works not only from the Tribuna but also from other parts of the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace, adjusting the layout to heighten visual interest. Although praised for its precision and complexity, the inclusion of so many contemporary figures was later judged inappropriate, and Zoffany received no further commissions from the royal family. |
