Robin Hood Bronze, height approximately 2.13 m., by James Arthur Woodford, 1951 Photograph by S. Harvey, 2020 |

| Commissioned by local industrialist Philip E. F. Clay, the Robin Hood statue stands outside Nottingham Castle as part of a group of three sculptures and four plaques. Woodford worked closely with historians to accurately depict a medieval forester. However, the statue’s leather skull cap stirred some public disappointment, as many expected the pointed hat popularised by Errol Flynn in the 1939 film, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Cast in eight bronze pieces, the statue stands proudly in a classic archer’s pose, with the bow and arrow pointed north-west towards the gatehouse of Nottingham Castle. It sits atop a two-and-a-half-ton block of white Clipsham stone. Over the years, the arrow and other parts have been repeatedly replaced due to souvenir hunters. |
