Portrait of a lady with a blue hat
Watercolour and bodycolour over traces of pencil, 36.5 x 26.8 cm, by Sir Leslie Ward, 1908
Location unknown

While Ward gained fame for his caricatures, he was also asked to produce more faithful likenesses of fellow Society members. In these works, he deliberately avoided exaggeration, choosing realistic proportions to avoid offending his subjects. This portrait of a young woman in a blue hat, painted with delicate brushwork and a light palette, shifts away from satire towards poise and elegance.
