| This cabinet was likely intended to store rare and exotic items, such as medals, gems, or shells. Vinckenbrinck’s monogram, [AL] [VB], appears on several of the fruitwood reliefs, with each drawer adorned with detailed scenes illustrating biblical, allegorical, historical, and mythological subjects, including the symbols of the Passion, Judith and Holofernes, the contest of Apollo and Marsyas, the deaths of Cleopatra and Lucretia, and two Renaissance-style portrait medallions. The presence of women in many of the themes may have served a moral or cautionary purpose, while the religious imagery reflects a focus on Christian virtue. |
