Still Life with Flowers
Oil on canvas, 89.5 cm x 65 cm, by Simon Pietersz. Verelst (c. 1644–1721)
Location unknown

Carnations, tulips, roses, poppies, and assorted smaller blooms emerge from a glass vase, their tones intensified by the dark ground, giving the arrangement a studied clarity. The sagging leaves, twisting stems, and fallen blossoms at the ledge introduce a controlled sense of tension. Verelst’s technique relies on fine glazes and restrained modulation of light to give the arrangement a poised, slightly luxuriant finish.
