Red Peppers (Poivrons rouges)
Oil on canvas, 46 x 55 cm, by Félix Vallotton, 1915
Kunstmuseum Solothur

Five bell peppers of various colours lie on a small marble table positioned before a darker turquoise wall, its surface faintly reflecting the fruit. Vallotton carefully depicts how light plays across the peppers’ shiny skins, enhancing their realism. Curiously, the knife beside them appears marked by a deep red stain resembling blood, though this colour seems too intense to come from the peppers and likely results from a reflection on the blade.
