Guillaume Vallet (1633–1704)

A French engraver and publisher, Vallet was born in Paris. His father, Jean Vallet, also an engraver and publisher, died when he was only three, and his mother placed him under the guidance of the artist Jean Daret at a young age. Demonstrating rapid talent, he travelled to Rome at twenty with his friend Étienne Picart and studied under Carlo Maratti, which influenced his style and gave his engravings the balance of elegance and clarity characteristic of the Baroque period. After eight years, during which he focused on engraving works by Italian and French masters, he returned to Paris to settle. He became a member of the Académie in 1664 and exhibited at the Salon in 1673 and 1699. Vallet engraved many paintings by other artists, particularly Italian and French masters. His works often included portraits, religious scenes, and classical subjects, translating the compositions, expressions, and details of original paintings into finely detailed prints, leaving a legacy of accomplished engravings before his death in Paris.
