Gerard Valck (1652–1726)

A Dutch draftsman, mezzotinter, engraver, etcher, cartographer, publisher, and art dealer, Valck was born in Amsterdam. He began as a servant to the painter Abraham Bloteling, but after marrying his master’s sister, he was trained in engraving and eventually became Bloteling’s partner, collaborating on several mezzotints, so it is common to see the same plates credited to both. They produced much work for the print seller Browne, who often left their names off the plates. During his time with Bloteling, Valck spent a period in England working for David Loggan before returning to Amsterdam, where he helped Peter Schenck publish a large Dutch Atlas in two folio volumes in 1683. He died in Amsterdam, leaving behind numerous mezzotints and engravings, including portraits and other subjects.
