Alexis Léon Louis Valbrun (1803–1852)

Valbrun was an eminent portrait painter for the aristocracy, born in Paris. Orphaned at two, he was raised by his mother’s family, the same one that later counted Berthe Morisot among its members. He trained under Nicolas Gosse and Antoine-Jean Gros, mastering drawing and the use of contrasting colours, which became his signature in portraiture. Entering the École des Beaux-Arts in 1817, he competed in the Grand Prix de Rome and started exhibiting at the Salon in 1831, continuing until 1843. By the late 1830s, weakened by poor health and the need to support his family, he took on church commissions for religious works and designed sets for Parisian opera houses and theatres. Despite his talent, Valbrun died in Paris in poverty.
