J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851)

The son of a barber, Joseph Mallord William Turner was a pioneering English painter renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to landscape art during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Widely regarded as one of history’s greatest landscape painters, he  demonstrated a profound understanding of light, colour, and atmosphere, capturing nature in its most sublime and evocative forms. His masterful use of paint and innovative techniques, particularly his manipulation of light and shadow, pushed the boundaries of artistic expression and laid the foundation for the Impressionist movement. Turner’s oeuvre ranged from serene pastoral scenes to dramatic seascapes and turbulent landscapes, each infused with emotional intensity and transcendent beauty. His later works, often characterised by bold, expressive brushstrokes and an almost abstract treatment of form, reflected a shift towards an even more experimental approach to painting. Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to his craft, producing an extensive body of work that continues to inspire artists and art lovers alike. He died in his native city of London, leaving a lasting influence on the development of landscape painting.
