Man at the Table with a Glass of Wine and a Bone
Watercolour and grey pen on paper, 19.8 x 15.1 cm, by Cornelis Troost, before 1750
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

A domestic moment with humour and subtle detail unfolds with charm. The man, seated at a finely set table with wine and a joint of meat, smiles as he pours himself a glass while holding a large bone, evidently for his attentive dog standing nearby. The interior, with its decorated wall panel and large window, suggests 18th-century affluence, yet the informal pose and the dog’s eager gaze lend the scene a sense of warmth and familiarity. Troost’s light touch and use of muted colours highlight the gentle, almost theatrical interplay between man and animal.
