Tomotada II (fl. early–19th century)

Tomotada II, also known as Tomotada of Yanagawa, was a later netsuke carver who adopted the name of the renowned 18th-century master Tomotada I. He likely worked in the Yanagawa region and adopted the name Tomotada either as homage to or to trade on the reputation of the Kyoto master. While Tomotada I is celebrated for his lifelike animal carvings and sophisticated Kyoto style, Tomotada II remains largely unknown, with little biographical information and only a handful of works that can be confidently attributed to him. Many pieces signed 'Tomotada' but differing stylistically or lacking the finesse of the original are often ascribed to Tomotada II, though such attributions remain speculative and are debated among scholars. Pieces definitively by his hand are signed in relief: 友忠.
