Philippe de Soye (c. 1538–c. 1578)

Little is known about de Soye (Sericeus, Sytius), an engraver and publisher born in Soye, Belgium. He studied under Cornelis Cort, whose influence is evident in his work, and was likely a fellow pupil of the engraver Philippe Thomassin. Following his master's example, he settled in Rome, where he was active from 1566 to 1572. He specialised in religious and biblical subjects, contributing to the Counter-Reformation's focus on devotional imagery, with his engravings collected by prominent connoisseurs and patrons of the arts. De Soye worked for the engraver and publisher Lafrery, among others, and is possibly the 'Filippo fiamengo' who created engravings for Lafrery and drowned before 1577. He used a larger chisel than Cort, and while his drawings were less precise, his works were still highly regarded. His place of death is not known.
