The Lutenist
Oil on panel, 51.5 38.5 cm, by Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh, 1661
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

In a room a young man plays on the lute for a woman sitting and listening at a table. On the table sit a bowl with fruit, bread, a jug and an open music book. On the floor are a dog and a cat. On the wall is a painting of Pyramus and Thisbe, suggesting either that harmonious love is the subject, or warns against impulsive lust.
