Under a Pergola, Algiers
Oil on canvas, 55.7 x 43.3, by Frances Kenney Schultze, 1843
Location unknown

An amateur painter, Schultze was the daughter of the doctor at the British consulate in Algiers. She depicts a serene moment beneath the shade of a pergola, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blooms. Towering banana leaves stretch toward a streaked blue sky, with a steep red hill rising behind tall trees. The wooden pergola shelters a small group—two men lounging in conversation, one in a broad straw hat and pale trousers, the other in red trousers and a dark coat. A woman in blue, seated on the ground, is absorbed in needlework, adding a touch of domesticity to the scene. Another woman stands nearby, dressed in a voluminous skirt and wide-brimmed hat, her open paint box and palette beside her as she gazes at the artist painting the scene. Through an Orientalist lens, the painting captures a moment of stillness, where leisure, landscape, and human composition meet in quiet balance, despite its colonial undertones.
