| Schneider was a German painter and sculptor known for his contributions to the Symbolist movement. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, he moved to Dresden in 1889 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. He gained attention for his homoerotic works, including illustrations for Karl May's adventure novels such as Winnetou and Old Surehand. In 1904, he became a professor at the Weimar Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School. After facing blackmail due to his sexuality, he fled to Italy in 1908, returning to Germany with the outbreak of World War I. Schneider co-founded the Kraft-Kunst Institute in Dresden, promoting bodybuilding as an art form. His work blended Symbolism and Art Nouveau, featuring dramatic brushwork that highlighted spiritual and mythological themes, often through bold lighting effects and flowing, natural forms.
