Pieter Schenk (I) (1660–1711)

A German engraver, mezzotinter, cartographer, and publisher, Schenk was born in Elberfeld and studied drawing in Amsterdam. He began his engraving career with topographical works, which were assisted by Gerard Valck, whom he married in 1687. Valck later taught Schenk mezzotint, a process in which Schenk produced a large number of portraits. In 1683-84, the two became partners, and it is often difficult to distinguish between their collaborative publications and their individual works. Schenk became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1688. Around 1700, Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, appointed him as court engraver. He died in Leipzig.
