Louis-Charles Ruotte (1754–1806?)

A French stipple reproductive engraver, Ruotte was born in Paris and studied under Noël Le Mire. Initially working in line engraving, he later focused exclusively on the dotted technique, which he refined under Francesco Bartolozzi in London from 1781 to 1784. He married in London in 1782 and returned to Paris in 1785, where his son, also named Louis-Charles, was born. Ruotte exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1793, 1795, and 1796. There has been confusion over several prints signed 'Ruotte,' with some attributed to another engraver, possibly his son, though they were likely all by Louis-Charles the elder himself. He was a prolific engraver, known for portraits, caricatures, and genre scenes, though the quality of his work varied. Ruotte died in London.
