Thomas Rowlandson (1756–1827)

A painter and caricaturist, Rowlandson was a student at the Royal Academy School in 1771, where he was known for his devilments and high spirits, but he left shortly afterwards to study art in Paris for two years. After returning to his native London, he became a successful, prolific, and versatile artist, producing portraits, landscape drawings, etchings, and many caricatures. His early tendency to burlesque was disciplined by a serious turn toward portraiture, but he later returned to satire, which attracted a large public. Rowlandson is mostly known for his caricatures, on which he relied for a steady income. His portraits show a distinctive, sketchy style that won the admiration of Joshua Reynolds and others. His landscapes are often less violent and have a charming, picturesque quality. He was a close friend of the caricaturist James Gillray, and ended his days in London.
