Albert Robida (1848–1926)

Born in Compiègne, Albert Robida was a French illustrator, writer, caricaturist, and visionary satirist known for his imaginative contributions to science fiction, futuristic art, and social commentary. Displaying an early talent for drawing, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He gained recognition for his satirical illustrations and his visionary depictions of future technologies, which appeared in publications such as La Caricature and Le Journal Amusant. His creative insight and attention to detail earned him international acclaim, particularly for works such as Le Vingtième Siècle and La Vie Électrique, which anticipated technological advances such as video conferencing and flying machines, as well as societal shifts, including gender equality and environmental degradation, marking him as a key figure in the early development of speculative fiction art and progressive thought. Accompanied by a combination of intricate, often whimsical illustrations with sharp narrative wit, his work reflected both fascination and skepticism toward progress. Robida is recognised for influencing public discourse through a unique blend of humour, fantasy, and forward-thinking critique, offering a sharp yet imaginative perspective on societal progress.. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
