Paulus Potter (c. 1625–1652)

Born in Enkhuizen on 20 November 1625, Paulus Potter moved with his family to Amsterdam in 1631, where his father Pieter purchased citizenship and trained him in painting. In 1642, Potter studied under Jacob de Wet the Elder in Haarlem and may have also been influenced by other Amsterdam painters like Moegaert. His first signed painting, The Herdsman, dates from 1643, marking the beginning of his focus on studying nature, which became the central theme of his work. In 1646, he moved to Delft, joined the Guild of St Luke, and pushed himself to develop further. By 1649, he had relocated to The Hague, where he married Adriana Balckeneynde, daughter of an architect, in 1650. In 1652, Potter returned to Amsterdam and was supported by Mayor Nicolaes Tulp. Despite his growing reputation, his health declined, and he died at 28. His fame, though often overstated, is rooted in his exceptional commitment to observing and painting the natural world. His style is marked by an unusually intimate and naturalistic focus on animals, which he brought from background elements to central subjects with a remarkable grace. Most of Potter's works were small in scale.
