Poster for Delft Salad Oil
Lithograph, 95 x 62.5 cm, by Jan Toorop, 1894
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Commissioned by the Nederlandsche Oliefabriek, an oil manufacturer in Delft, the poster depicts two women with wavy hair and billowing draperies, one of them dressing a salad. The women, with their emphatic contours, draw attention away from the actual advertisement, and the poster made such an impression that Dutch Art Nouveau acquired the nickname ‘salad oil style’.
