'The Grand Duke; or, The Statutory Duel' is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, premiering in 1896 at the Savoy Theatre. Set in the fictional Grand Duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig, it centres on a statutory duel, where disagreements on points of law lead to comedic misunderstandings and farcical situations. The plot involves Grand Duke Rudolph and a theatrical troupe led by Ludwig, who scheme to overthrow the government through impersonations and confusion. Despite its charming music and witty dialogue, the operetta had limited success, closing after 123 performances. Nonetheless, it has seen occasional revivals and recordings, showcasing Gilbert and Sullivan's signature satirical commentary on bureaucracy and politics.
