Virgen del Buen Aire
Majolica tile panel, after Alejo Fernández, 20th century
Isaac Fernández Blanco Museum, Buenos Aires

Located in the gardens of the Palacio Noel, now a museum, the work depicts the Virgen del Buen Aire, a Marian devotion associated with protection at sea and regarded as the patroness of Buenos Aires. It is based on The Virgin of the Navigators, painted by Alejo Fernández between 1531 and 1536 for the Casa de la Contratación in Seville, the institution responsible for overseeing Spain’s voyages to the Americas. The painting shows the Virgin Mary spreading her mantle over a group of explorers and officials connected to Spain’s Atlantic expeditions, including Christopher Columbus and other navigators and royal representatives involved in the early voyages to the New World.
