Model of a pagoda with bells
Porcelain, cobalt, glaze, and iron; 122 cm x 26 cm, anonymous, c. 1765–c. 1775
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

From the Qianlong period, this type of pagoda model was created for Western collectors. It is octagonal in shape and consists of eight parts: a base, six floors, and a porcelain peak topped with two golden balls. It is painted in underglaze blue and gold on the glaze. The base of the pagoda features alternating images of a fool and a flowering plant (lotus, peony). It is surrounded by an openwork porcelain gate, which is open on one side. The floors are decorated in underglaze blue with bricks and closed doors alternating with recessed open doors. A balcony railing encircles each floor. The roof has golden carp at the corners, from which iron chains with bells hang.
