Attic
Red-Figure Column Krater
Terracotta, 36.5 × 34.9 × 30 cm, by the Tyszkiewicz Painter
(Greek - Attic), c. 480–470 B.C.
J. Paul Getty Museum,
Los Angeles
The scene is of the bearded Zeus holding an anthemion and lunging
towards a woman fleeing to the right. He grasps her shoulder with
his left hand, while his right hand clutches a staff topped with a
palmette ornament. Both figures are nude except for draped garments
(a himation for the male and a chiton and himation for the woman).
Their hair is elaborately styled in a krobylos, with a single strand
remaining loose for the male. The fleeing woman glances back, while
a second woman with unbound hair also flees to the right, looking
back and holding her skirt. A fillet adorns the head of each figure.
The scene is framed by the outstretched limbs of the male and the
flowing garments of both women.
