Red-Figure Column Krater
Terracotta, 36.5 × 34.9 × 30 cm, by the Tyszkiewicz Painter
(Greek - Attic), c. 480–470 B.C.
J. Paul Getty Museum,
Los Angeles
The scene depicts a satyr in pursuit of a maenad. The maenad, clad
in a chiton and adorned with a wreath and leopard skin, flees to the
right while glancing back. The satyr, nude except for a leopard skin
and wreath, reaches out and grasps the maenad's shoulder with his
left hand. His right hand holds a thyrsos staff horizontally. The
edges of the composition cut off the end of the thyrsos, the satyr's
tail and right foot, and the maenad's left foot.
