Previously attributed to William Henry Fox Talbot, the print shows Antoine Claudet (with white hair) engaging in a game of chess with another gentleman. A very early example of chess captured in photography, the stark illumination creates a sense of tension by spotlighting the players’ faces and hands, giving the scene a theatrical quality. |
