Georg Pencz (1500–1550)

A German painter, engraver, and printmaker who trained under Albrecht Dürer, Pencz is associated with the Nuremberg school and the broader Northern Renaissance. After visiting Italy several times, he was influenced by the Italian masters, particularly Raphael, and the classical ideals of proportion and harmony, developing a strong sense of design that distinguished him from his contemporaries. He was close to Dürer and was entrusted with executing murals in the Nuremberg town hall based on Dürer’s designs. Regarded as one of the most talented of the younger artists to follow his master, he became city painter of Nuremberg in 1532 and was appointed court painter to the Duke of Prussia in 1550, though he died in Leipzig before assuming the post. Pencz is best remembered for his engravings of Raphael’s works, created in collaboration with Marcantonio Raimondi, and for his work with the Beham brothers as part of the Little Masters, a renowned group of German engravers. He is credited with contributing to the spread of Renaissance aesthetics in German art.
