Still Life of Fish and Cat
Oil on panel, 34.3 x 47 cm, by Clara Peeters, after 1620
National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.

An abundance of fish and seafood dominates the scene, with a red ceramic colander displaying various fish, the curved body of an eel introducing fluid movement, while metallic reflections enhance the sense of depth in the composition. A vigilant cat, its ears flattened, stands protectively over the seafood bounty, its fur contrasting with the slick fish scales, glazed pottery, and rough oyster shells, providing the painting with rich textural variety. Peeters often painted such scenes of culinary abundance, steering clear of the moralising undertones commonly found in still-life art.
