Luciano Nezzo (1856–1903)

Born at Badia Polesine, Nezzo was an Italian genre and history painter. Showing artistic talent early on, he first trained under the local master Marco Vallerini, who also became his patron, and was later enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, where he studied for around ten years and won a gold medal for two of his compositions. After completing his studies there, he enlisted as a soldier during the Italian War of Independence and was stationed in Milan, continuing his artistic education at the Accademia di Brera. He went on to become a professor of painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Urbino and eventually its director. Nezzo exhibited regularly, including in Rome in 1883, Turin in 1884, and Rovigo in 1887, where he received a silver medal, and he was admired for his technical skill, rich use of colour, and the earnestness of his aesthetic ideals. Nezzo died in Urbino.
