Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682)

Murillo was a renowned Spanish Baroque painter, born in Seville. Orphaned young, he trained with the painter Juan del Castillo and in 1645 travelled to Madrid, where he studied the work of leading artists, including Velázquez. Returning to Seville in 1653, he became one of the city’s most important painters. His religious works, marked by soft light and idealised figures, brought him wide acclaim, and his images of the Virgin Mary were especially sought after, leading to many commissions for altarpieces and devotional paintings. Alongside these, Murillo created scenes of daily life in Seville, showing an acute awareness of ordinary people and their surroundings. This balance between religious art and depictions of contemporary life secured his reputation as one of the foremost painters of the Spanish Baroque. He died in Seville.
