| Rudolf Müller (1816–1904) | ||||||||||
| A painter and art historian, Müller was born in Reichenberg, now Liberec, in Bohemia. Showing talent from an early age, he was sent to the Academy of Art in Prague, and in 1835 entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied under Josef Ritter von Führich, whose influence shaped his style. He later continued his studies in Munich, Nuremberg, and Dresden, and on returning to Prague in 1838, inspired by Peter von Cornelius and the Nazarene movement, Müller established himself as an independent artist producing portraits, historical subjects, and landscapes in a romantic-historicist manner. Over time he shifted towards realism in portraiture, and in 1872 he became professor of drawing at the state middle school in Reichenberg. His body of work was large, with many commissions for altarpieces and church paintings. He died in Reichenberg. | ||||||||||
