The Gare Saint-Lazare: Arrival of a Train Oil on canvas, 101.3 x 83 cm, by Claude Monet, 1877 Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts |

A celebration of modern
urban life where the fleeting atmosphere of a busy railway terminus
reflects the transient nature of the contemporary world. The iron
lattice of the station roof frames a chaotic scene where billowing
clouds of steam and soot from the locomotive merge into a luminous,
hazy atmosphere. Patches of bright blue sky peek through the glass
panels, contrasting with the dark silhouettes of the ironwork and
the spectral figures of passengers drifting across the sunlit
platforms.. |
