As part of his studies at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, Maris produced studies of facial expressions. Here, an elderly woman with closed eyes is depicted with attention to facial anatomy and surface detail. Controlled brushwork and a subdued background bring out the texture of the skin, the folds and wrinkles, and the tonal contrasts, producing a study of age and expression. |
