Oculus from the ceiling fresco of the Camera degli Sposi
Fresco, by Andrea Mantegna, 1465–74
Palazzo Ducale, Mantua
Adapted from an image by Gonzaloferjar

An illusionistic view upward through an oculus into open sky, populated by cherubs and onlookers who appear to lean over a stone balustrade. Perspective is handled with great assurance, giving the figures a vivid presence and creating the impression that the ceiling has opened above the viewer. Part of a fresco cycle covering the walls and ceiling of a private audience and reception chamber, commissioned by the Marquis of Mantua as a statement of dynastic pride, learning, and authority, presenting the ruling family as cultured, legitimate, and closely aligned with classical ideals and divine favour.
