Oculus from the ceiling
fresco of the Camera degli Sposi Fresco, by Andrea Mantegna, 1465–74 Palazzo Ducale, Mantua Adapted from an image by Gonzaloferjar |

| An illusionistic view upward through an oculus into open sky, populated by cherubs and onlookers who appear to lean over a stone balustrade. Perspective is handled with great assurance, giving the figures a vivid presence and creating the impression that the ceiling has opened above the viewer. Part of a fresco cycle covering the walls and ceiling of a private audience and reception chamber, commissioned by the Marquis of Mantua as a statement of dynastic pride, learning, and authority, presenting the ruling family as cultured, legitimate, and closely aligned with classical ideals and divine favour. |
