Simon Malgo (1745–1793)

Simon Malgo (also known as Malcho) was a Danish painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and publisher, born in Copenhagen. The son of a master painter, he studied at the Danish Royal Academy from 1763 to 1771, where he received several awards. In 1767, he was awarded a medal for his painting David Anointed by Samuel and later worked for several years with the painter Johan Edvard Mandelberg. Despite developing dementia, he travelled to Rome with fellow artist Nicolai Abildgaard in 1773, and in 1777 he went to Paris with artists Johan Frederik Clemens and Jens Juel. He eventually moved to London, where he worked with copperplate engravings and produced coloured prints of his own. There, he was reunited with Clemens in 1792. Malcho died in London.
