Scaramouche
Watercolour on paper, c. 27 x c. 26 cm, by Ludovic Napoléon Lepic, 1886
Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris

A costume design of Scaramouche Louis Mérante's harlequinade ballet Les jumeaux de Bergame, a comic production about two identical twins from Bergamo whose resemblance causes a series of mistaken identities and romantic mix-ups. Scaramouche, a stock character in the Italian commedia dell’arte, is traditionally portrayed as a boastful and cowardly trickster dressed in black Spanish-style clothing.
