Jan Kraeck (c. 1540–1607)

Also known as Giovanni Caracca, Kraeck was a Dutch Renaissance painter and draughtsman born in Haarlem. From 1568, he worked as court painter to the dukes of Savoy and became a citizen of Chambéry around 1577, remaining in the duke's service until his death. His career took him across Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, where he developed a style influenced by Anthonis Mor, the court painter to King Philip II of Spain. Known for his detailed portraiture, Kraeck captured the nobility with careful focus on costume, heraldic detail, and the solemn dignity of rank. His work reflects the transitional aesthetics of late Renaissance court art, blending Netherlandish accuracy with Italianate grandeur. His portraits of the Savoy family are particularly notable, especially during the reign of Carlo Emanuele I, who sought to expand the family’s influence. In addition to portraits, Kraeck painted religious scenes, historical works, and still lifes. He died in Turin and was buried in the cathedral there.
