Hans Janssen (1605–after 1636)

A Flemish engraver, printmaker, and draughtsman, little is known about the life of Janssen. Born in Amsterdam, he was the son of Jan Jansz, also an engraver. Initially influenced by Theodor de Bry, his style evolved between the Renaissance and Baroque. Janssen collaborated with Bartolomeus van Lochom, who engraved many of his designs. A prolific artist, he created engravings for silversmiths, including designs for dishes, cutlery handles, and plates. His work is marked by fine execution, with precise and tasteful ornamentation. He may have also engraved silver, as two engraved dishes are attributed to him. Active in Amsterdam, Janssen’s place and date of death remain unknown.
