Gustave Janet (1829–1898)

Born in Paris, Janet was a lithographer, wood engraver, painter, and draughtsman. The son of a print dealer, he received his first training from his elder brother, the lithographer Ange-Louis Janet, with whom he later collaborated on Le Panthéon populaire illustré. Janet worked on several books, including The Illustrated Byron in 1855 and The Tempest in 1860, as well as periodicals such as Revue de la mode, Monde illustré, Illustrated London News, and Illustrated Times. He provided numerous illustrations for fashion publications, particularly La Mode Artistique, which he founded and directed in 1868. His work aligns closely with Neoclassicism, particularly in his lithography and wood engraving. His illustrations, characterised by sharp definition and intricate workmanship, reflect the influence of both classical themes and 19th-century academic traditions. Janet died in Paris.
