Bird and grotesque [detail]
From Royal MS 16 G VII, f. 219r, anonymous, 1473–76
The British Library, London

From the manuscript Caesar, translated by Jan Du Quesne (or Jean Duchesne), Bellum Gallicum (Les commentaires de César), which is Du Quesne's earliest surviving version of the French translation. Addressed to Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, it is possibly the presentation copy intended for the Duke himself. Les Commentaires de César is a translated and expanded rendition of the Bellum Gallicum.
